Education: Elementary K-5 (UTPT UEK5)

Students who follow this academic plan will receive an Associate of Science in Teaching-Elementary Education.

The A.S.T. curriculum is designed for students who wish to complete the first two years of a program toward teacher certification in K-5 (elementary education) and then transfer to a Tennessee Board of Regents University for the completion of their four year degree. This curriculum will meet the lower division requirements for transfer to a Tennessee Board of Regents senior institution granting the bachelor's degree in elementary education. Due to varying requirements of four-year institutions, students are encouraged to select courses in consultation with an education advisor. Students who plan to transfer to the University of Tennessee or any other non-TBR university should contact their advisor for appropriate degree and transfer information.

¹Students who plan to transfer to UTK are encouraged to complete one U.S. History course as part of this requirement. Students who plan to transfer to MTSU are encouraged to complete a World History course. APSU requires students to complete one World History course. Students who plan to transfer to the University of Memphis must complete a sequence (either HIST 1110/1120 or HIST 2010/2020).

²UTK recommends that students complete Astronomy for the non-Biology with lab requirement.

³Students who plan to transfer to APSU must take an Educational Psychology. Students who plan to transfer to ETSU are encouraged to take Developmental Psychology or Educational Psychology.

⁴Students who plan to transfer to Christian Brothers University are encouraged to complete POLS 1030 American Government. Students who plan to transfer to UTK are encouraged to complete ECON 2010 Macroeconomics.

⁵Students who plan to transfer to UTC are required to take a Physical Science course.

Additional Degree Requirements

Students earning an AST degree must meet the following additional degree requirements

Attainment of a 2.75 cumulative grade point average (GPA)
ACT composite of 21 (or SAT score of 1080) or higher or successful completion of approved standardized examination (Praxis Core) for admission to the university's College of Education.
Satisfactory rating on an index of suitability for the teaching profession (dispositions).
Students transferring to a public unversity in Tennessee may need to meet additional requirements to gain admittance to the university.
